Mini Saga winners announced!

The Mini Saga winners were all announced at the Tonypandy Commemorative events on Sunday 7th November - click here to read the winning entries!!

There were over 300 entries from across the UK, USA, Spain and The Netherlands - a fabulous response. The standard was high and a big thank you goes to the judges.

Tonypandy Commemorations

Events are planned for 7th November 2010 around Tonypandy to remember the events of 100 years ago - Click here for more information.

A new history of the Riots has also been published by David Maddox and Gwyn Evans, jointly recognised as local experts on the infamous 1910 event, have finally published their extensive archive of unique images, never-before-seen government papers and interviews with the rioters themselves.

“The Tonypandy Riots 1910-1911” contains a remarkable collection of 250 photographic images and eye witness accounts.

Copies of “The Tonypandy Riots 1910-1911” by David Maddox and Gwyn Evans are available, priced £15.00 plus postage and packing by emailing esis15@aol.com. The book will be officially launched at Rhondda Heritage Park at 6.30pm on Thursday, November 4th. A book signing will also take place at Tonypandy Central Library on Wednesday 10th November at 6pm.

Mini Saga now closed!

The 2010 Cordell Mini Saga has now closed for entries - and the judges are doing their work!

We have been delighted with the number of entries and the judges will have a tough job - but they are really looking forward to it!!

The result will be announced at a Tonypandy event on 7th November - keep an eye on www.cordellcountry.org for more information.

In the meantime there are loads of things to do in south Wales - especially if you want to escape the Ryder Cup - and the rain! How about a day at Big Pit or Rhondda Heritage Park - or explore Cyfarthfa Castle and take a look at how the other half lived during the industrial revolution! Have fun - there are loads of things to do here!

Cordell Festival

The Festival at Rhondda Heritage Park was a great successes with over 1000 people attending. Highlights including the music and performances based around Cordells stories, as well as coach tours and trips "underground". It was a great day out for all the family.

The Valleys Walking Festival

A great exhibition by local artist Linda Morgan is taking place at Cyfarthfa Castle, Merthyr Tydfil throughout September. Se was inspired by the stories and views of south Wales - just like Cordell!

The new Cordell Country website has gone live - http://www.cordellcountry.org/ - with new interactive maps fo the suggested routes and places that inspired Cordell to write his books on the people of south Wales. Take a look - there are loads of ideas for days out in south Wales.

Cordell Mini Saga Launched

In a succinct fifty words, Valleys-born Richard Davies encouraged all ages to follow in Alexander Cordell’s footsteps, take inspiration from The Valleys and get writing.

In just fifty Welsh or English words, entrants to the Mini Saga competition must create a complete story based in South Wales on either of these themes: ‘Community’ or ‘Unbelievable’. Novelist Alexander Cordell was inspired by the lives and loves of the people of The Valleys over the last 200 years, and himself entered his early stories into writing competitions.

Further inspiration for all ages may be found on the new-look Cordell Country website http://www.cordellcountry.org/ and by visiting the FREE annual Cordell Festival. This year the Festival is being held at Rhondda Heritage Park on 18 & 19 September, and is one of a number of events being held to commemorate the centenary of the Tonypandy Riots.

Welcome to the new Cordell Fan Club blog.

Cordell wrote a host of books about south Wales based upon the stories he heard from local people. His books tell of the passion and community of south Wales during the industrial revolution of the 19th and 20th centurys.

His books have been published around the world and Rape of the Fair Country has been translated into 17 different languages.
